Five Maternity Photoshoot Styles: Which One Is You?

Before a maternity photoshoot, it helps to know what kind of photographs you'd love to have. If you're not sure yet, that's completely fine. Choosing is part of what we plan together.

To make it easier, I group maternity photographs into five styles: classic, relaxed, modern, editorial and fashion-forward. Below is one photograph from my studio in Kingsbury for each, with a few words on who it suits. You don't have to pick just one. If your package includes more than one look, we can mix two or three styles in one session.

1. Classic

Classic maternity photographs are the ones that still look right in twenty years. A beautiful gown, a simple pose, hands resting on the bump and soft, flattering light. Nothing is there just because it's fashionable this year.

Best for: anyone who wants a timeless portrait to frame, or a gift for grandparents. The studio wardrobe has gowns for exactly this.

2. Relaxed

Jeans, a simple top and a moment between the two of you.

Relaxed photographs feel like you on a good day. Your own jeans, a simple top, sitting close together on the floor. The posing is still guided, but the result looks natural rather than arranged.

Best for: couples, and anyone who feels a little shy in front of the camera. If you'd rather not wear a gown, this is your style.

3. Modern

Modern maternity photographs are clean and simple: neutral colours, fitted clothes and very little in the frame apart from you. The bump is shown clearly, and the colours sit together calmly.

Best for: anyone who loves a minimal, neutral look, and photographs that sit easily on a modern wall or in an album.

4. Editorial

Editorial photographs are about shape, light and movement more than faces and smiles. A silhouette against a bright background, fabric in mid-air, a pose that looks like it belongs on a magazine page. These are the most artistic images of a session.

Best for: anyone who wants something different from the usual maternity photo, or one striking piece of wall art.

5. Fashion-forward

Fashion-forward photographs borrow from fashion shoots: bold outfits, coloured light and confident poses. In this one, the studio light is left in the frame as part of the look.

Best for: anyone who loves fashion and wants to feel like the star of her own shoot.

Not sure which style is yours?

You don't need to decide alone. When you book, we talk through what you like, what you'd wear and who will be in the photographs. With The Story and The Legacy packages you have several looks, so you can try a classic gown and a relaxed outfit in the same session.

Most women have their maternity photoshoot between 28 and 34 weeks. My studio is in Kingsbury, North West London, with free parking. Mums-to-be come from all over London, and it's easy to reach from Wembley, Harrow, Colindale, Stanmore, Borehamwood, Watford and Finchley.
